IS THIS THE BEST YOU CAN DO?

We were already interested in Het Wereldmuseum.
We think that their potential influence on how people see race is very interesting.
We think however, that they are not fully using the power of the platform they have created.

The museum is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. It has not always been a very successful museum, having received backlash because of focussing more on commercial ventures than educational ones. In 2017 the museum merged with the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen because of funding issues.

Right now the museum is getting renovated until the end of the year.
So, the perfect time for a good online presence

The Wereldmuseum is filled with all sorts of artefacts from old cultures. They also make place for more contemporary exhibition, though almost always centered around human culture.

We expected the Wereldmuseum to take an active part in the rising black lives matter movement. They have all the educational tools to do so. They are able to teach to everyone how institutional racism came to be in the Netherlands. They have the chance to make their museum into more than just a museum. They have the chance to build an educational platform that can empower people with new perspectives that we now desperately need.

The only thing they've done is this...

They participated in black out tuesday, which is a very controversial subject to begin with because shortly all of social media was drowned in black squares and actual news of the worldwide protests weren't visible.

For an institution that can do way more than this, this is shameful. They missed a big chance.
Right now would be the time to speak up and teach people. Right now people are paying actual attention to the problems between races word wide.

We wanted to critique lack of activism of the Wereldmuseum. We wanted to use the black square as a strong visuals sign.
